Drummers celebrate anniversary with sunset

The Maui Zenshin Daiko Drummers celebrates its 21st anniversary with a performance in Kula at the Ocean Vodka Farm during the “Sunset at The Point Music Series” on July 23, before the county’s rules limiting gatherings to 10 people went into effect. Maui filmmaker Kenneth Martinez Burgmaier, who produced and directed the event for the students, said they were unable to mark the milestone at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, which has halted performances during the pandemic. About 40 kids participated, including four who were graduating after 11 years with the drummers and had their final performance on the slopes of Haleakala.

In March, the drummers had been planning to travel to San Antonio, Texas, to perform; in a normal year the organization performs more than 50 times.

A video of the 21st anniversary performance will be broadcast on Jazz Alley TV and on HawaiiONTV.com as well as on YouTube.
