Homesteaders evacuate from fire
Kahikinui homesteaders were evacuated early Monday, as firefighters battled nine brush fires reported just before midnight on Piilani Highway.
The fires were reported at 11:58 p.m. Sunday between Mile Markers 23 and 27, according to the Maui Fire Department.
By about 1 p.m. Monday, all but three of the brush fires were contained. Fire crews were working on hot spots and securing perimeters of the three remaining fires “and making good progress” toward containment amid trade winds of about 25 mph, according to the Fire Department.
About 65 total acres burned, the Fire Department reported.
Police also responded to the fire, evacuating homestead residents shortly after 2 a.m. By 5:10 a.m., residents were allowed to return home. Police had closed the highway at Mile Marker 24 and Mile Marker 27.5.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
