Renovations set to close Kahului Public Library on Aug. 10
The Maui News
The Kahului Public Library will be closed for renovations starting Aug. 10, with Saturday the last day for library services.
Library patrons may pick up their requests until 4 p.m. Saturday. After the closure, they may select another Maui branch to pick up their holds. Items borrowed from the Kahului Public Library prior to the closure may be returned to any other public library on Maui.
“We know the Maui community loves the Kahului Public Library,” State Librarian Stacey Aldrich said in a news release Sunday. “Unfortunately, the library building is more than 57 years old and this long-planned renovation project is necessary. We thank the Hawaii State Legislature, particularly Sen. Gil Keith-Agaran and Rep. Justin Woodson, for their support to fund the renovations.”
Construction will include replacing the air-conditioning system, ceiling panels, improvements to lighting throughout the building and other interior improvements. The work is scheduled to be finished in mid-2021. However, the pandemic could delay the completion date.
During the renovation, library patrons can call or visit any of the other five public libraries on Maui, including:
• Hana Public and School Library, 4111 Hana Highway, 248-4848
• Kihei Public Library, 35 Waimahaihai Street, 875-6833
• Lahaina Public Library, 680 Wharf Street, 662-3950
• Makawao Public Library, 1159 Makawao Avenue, 573-8785
• Wailuku Public Library, 251 S. High Street, 243-5766
