Filipino Hale getting a facelift

First photo: Bahay Kubo Heritage Foundation member Rolex Magliba spackles the fascia of the Bahay Kubo, or Filipino Hale, while working as part of a volunteer crew at Kepaniwai Heritage Gardens in Iao Valley on Sept. 12. Foundation President Zaldy Ugalino said the structure’s roof replacement project is scheduled to be done by the end of the year. “Everything is going well thanks to our talented volunteers and the County of Maui,” he said. Ugalino said the foundation received a $20,000 grant from the county to replace the old tin roof, which was rusted through and damaged by high winds. He said the new roof is made of galvanized steel and meets Maui County building code requirements.
