A fountain in Wailuku

Water gushes from a dislodged fire hydrant at the KAOI Radio Plaza on Central Avenue in Wailuku just before noon Tuesday. Ron Middag of KAOI Radio said he was inside the building when he heard “kind of a thump sound and then a whoosh.” He said as he was taking pictures of the plume of water, a man walked up to him and told him he’d backed into the fire hydrant. “He said that he had pulled into the driveway from Central and couldn’t quite make the turn, so he had to back up to get room to clear the turn,” Middag said. Maui County spokesman Chris Sugidono said that central maintenance crews from the county Department of Water Supply isolated the leak and stopped the flow. He said the hydrant will need to be repaired. The water shot high enough to reach electrical lines along Central Avenue, but Hawaiian Electric Co. spokeswoman Shayna Decker said no power outages were reported in the area.
