Alleged use of metal pipe during assault leads to arrest

The Maui News

WAILUKU — A Haiku man was arrested for allegedly using a metal pipe to assault another man and steal his cellphone last week in a Wailuku parking lot.

Kaiewe Davidson, 34, was charged with second-degree assault and second-degree theft.

Police records show he was arrested Monday afternoon in connection with the assault that occurred Friday.

During his initial appearance Wednesday in Wailuku District Court, Deputy Prosecutor Brant Yoshimoto said the victim reported he was hit with a metal pipe and rendered unconscious in an attack that was “unprovoked and without notice.”

The 29-year-old victim also reported his cellphone was stolen when he was assaulted near Kanaloa Avenue and War Memorial Stadium.

“Although the defendant doesn’t have a lot of convictions, the defendant does have 50-plus arrests,” Yoshimoto said, in asking for Davidson’s bail to be increased to $60,000.

If convicted, Davidson could face a mandatory minimum prison term of one year and eight months based on his 2016 conviction for second-degree theft, Yoshimoto said.

He said Davidson has been on probation since 2013 and has had his probation revoked at least twice.

“Given the violence associated with this crime, the state is saying he is a danger to society,” Yoshimoto said.

Deputy Public Defender William Pannell asked for Davidson to be released on his own recognizance or to have bail reduced so he could have a chance of posting bail.

Judge Kirstin Hamman kept bail at $20,000 for Davidson.
