The Maui County Council passed a resolution Friday honoring Melvin Tomita, a Maui-born Bronze Star recipient who died after contracting COVID-19 at the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo.

The measure was introduced by Council Member Yuki Lei Sugimura.

“The people of the County of Maui and State of Hawaii have benefited by this great community leader, a man whose life is a model-worthy of emulation,” the resolution said.

Tomita, 87, died Sept. 4. He was born at Puunene Hospital, graduated from Baldwin High in 1951 and sold and repaired typewriters on Maui.

He earned his Bronze Star during the Vietnam War.
