The state Department of Health issued a brown-water advisory for Maui’s north shore from Hookipa to Waihee after heavy rain caused stormwater runoff in coastal waters.

The department advised the public to stay out of floodwaters and stormwater runoff due to possible overflowing cesspools, sewer, manholes, pesticides, animal fecal matter, dead animals, pathogens, chemicals and associated flood debris. Not all coastal areas may be impacted by runoff, however, if the water is brown, stay out.

The department also reminds people to practice good hygiene and to follow up with their physicians if they have any health concerns.
