Man charged with attempted murder
A 28-year-old man was arrested and charged with attempted murder in an assault early Friday in Kihei on an off-duty Maui police officer, who suffered life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized, police said.
Tomasi Caones-Paahana of Wailuku was being held on $500,000 bail after being charged with second-degree attempted murder.
Kihei patrol officers responded to a report of the assault at 12:54 a.m. Friday fronting an establishment in Kihei, police said.
Police records show officers were dispatched to Kihei Kalama Village.
The off-duty officer was transported by medics to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment.
Police detectives arrested Caones-Paahana at 10:11 a.m. Friday.
Police said the investigation is continuing.
