Police said speed is suspected as a factor in a collision on Hansen Road early Tuesday that critically injured a 59-year-old man.
The near-fatal crash occurred at 5:41 a.m. about 0.2 mile northeast of Pulehu Road in Kahului.
Police said a white Ford pickup truck, driven by a 41-year-old man, was traveling southwest on Hansen Road when it crossed the centerline and collided head-on into a green Infiniti sport utility vehicle that was traveling in the opposite direction.
The 59-year-old man who was driving the Infiniti suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, police said.
An investigation showed that neither driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.
The Ford driver was seen by medics and released at the scene. While officers were investigating, “it was apparent the operator of the Ford would be requiring additional medical treatment for nonlife-threatening injuries sustained from this crash,” police said. Traffic investigators transported the man to the hospital for treatment.
So far this year, six people have died in traffic crashes on Maui County roads, compared with 22 at the same time last year.
