Earthquake trembles below Mauna Loa

The U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory recorded a magnitude 4.1 earthquake beneath Mauna Loa’s northwest flank at 7:44 a.m. Friday.

The Maui Emergency Management Agency said the quake might have been felt in parts of Maui and that there was no tsunami threat.

The earthquake was centered about 14 miles east-northeast of Honaunau-Napo’opo’o, about 3 miles below sea level, a news release from the Volcano Observatory said.

Light shaking, with maximum Intensity of IV, has been reported across Hawaii island, the news release said. At that intensity, damage to buildings or structures is not expected.

According to HVO Acting Scientist-in-Charge David Phillips, the earthquake had no apparent effect on Kilauea or Mauna Loa volcanoes.

“We do not currently observe any changes in activity at Kilauea or Mauna Loa as a result of this earthquake,” Phillips said. “Please be aware that aftershocks are possible and may be felt. HVO continues to monitor Kilauea and other Hawaiian volcanoes for any changes.”
