A 35-year-old Lahaina woman died when the car she was driving failed to negotiate a curve and went off the road, falling 200 feet down a cliff in Kahakuloa on Monday afternoon, police said.

She was identified as Polyana De Melo.

The crash occurred at 12:32 p.m. Monday on Kahekili Highway, 0.6 mile east of Mile Marker 16, police said.

Preliminary investigation showed De Melo was driving a 2019 Nissan four-door sedan that was traveling east toward Wailuku on the highway when she failed to negotiate a curve in the road and drove off the cliff side, landing on the rocky shoreline 200 feet below, police said. She was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene, police said.

Police said she wasn’t wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

It was the first traffic death on Maui County roads this year, compared with two at the same time last year.
