Half-staff flags to honor Capitol Police officers

The Maui News

Flags will be flown at half-staff in Hawaii as a sign of respect for fallen Capitol Police officers and other law enforcement, Gov. David Ige announced Monday.

The U.S. and Hawaii state flags will be at half-staff at the state Capitol, state offices and agencies and the Hawaii National Guard until sunset Wednesday, at the direction of President Donald Trump.

Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick died of his injuries after he was attacked by a pro-Trump mob storming the U.S. Capitol building last week.

Another Capitol Police officer, Howard Liebengood, took his own life in the wake of the incident.

“These U.S. Capitol Police officers made the ultimate sacrifice so the certification of the free and fair election could proceed as the United States Constitution requires,” Ige said in a news release Monday. “I express my deepest condolences to the families of these officers.”
