Whale Film Festival seeks submissions

The Pacific Whale Foundation invites visual storytellers of all backgrounds who are passionate about the ocean and marine wildlife to submit their work for consideration in PWF’s annual World Whale Film Festival, which will be held virtually Feb. 18-28. The deadline for submissions is Jan. 15. All entries must include a $10 entry fee and a statement describing the film and why it is appropriate for the festival.

The festival will consider entries based on originality, messaging, overall impact, artistic merit and technical excellence. Filmmakers who submit their work must guarantee a high level of respect for the welfare of all marine wildlife and the ocean environment in the creation of their film and ensure that the locations of the shoot remained undisturbed during and after production. In addition, filmmakers must abide by all federal, state and regional regulations throughout the filming process.

If selected, participating filmmakers will have an opportunity to discuss their film via a virtual forum. For more information, visit https://filmfreeway.com/WorldWhaleFilmFestival.

Fundraiser aims to rebuild burned church

Community members have started an online fundraiser to help rebuild a more than century-old church that was damaged in a 760-acre brush fire in West Maui last month.

Maile Anderson of West Maui Land Co. is coordinating with Olowalu Lanakila Hawaiian Church adviser Hinano Rodrigues in raising $50,000 through GoFundMe to salvage the community social hall and other property that was burned.

The fire has delayed the Rodrigues family’s longtime plans to restore the historic church building.

“All funds raised will help the Olowalu Lanakila Hawaiian Church rebuild so they can continue to touch members of our Maui community,” a post on the GoFundMe page said. “All of your generous donations will be used immediately to pay for all necessities lost in the fire, including clean-up and construction costs, sound system, musical instruments, etc.”
