Man on the lam flees into ocean
A man was arrested after he allegedly sped away from police investigating a vehicle crash, then ran and went into the ocean Tuesday morning in Kihei, according to police.
Adam Matlock, 40, of Kihei was charged with first-degree resisting an order to stop a motor vehicle, violation of a public health emergency rule and having an open liquor container in a motor vehicle. His bail was set at $1,700.
Police were investigating the crash at 8:40 a.m. Tuesday at Milepost 1.5 on North Kihei Road when an open liquor container was seen in Matlock’s vehicle, police reported. Matlock wasn’t wearing a mask while approaching within 6 feet of officers, according to police.
An officer was writing citations when Matlock got into his vehicle and began driving away, police said. He refused to stop, driving at more than 35 mph over the speed limit before an officer used his public address system to order Matlock to pull over, police said. Matlock slowed down and began driving in the bike lane before stopping, getting out of the vehicle and running toward the ocean, according to police.
Matlock entered the water before an officer persuaded him to get out, police said.
He was arrested near Milepost 2.5 on North Kihei Road.
