Workshop to cover proposed shoreline rule changes
The Maui News
The Maui County Department of Planning will host a workshop on proposed rule changes that could affect properties near the shoreline on Maui.
The online workshop will be part of the Maui Planning Commission’s regular meeting at 9 a.m. Tuesday via BlueJeans.
The proposed rules are intended to streamline the regular and emergency special management area and shoreline permitting processes and ensure that new development is out of harm’s way by accounting for changing shoreline conditions from sea level rise, according to a news release from the county. The proposal also includes codifying minor actions that can be categorically exempt and no longer require assessment applications.
The department held meetings to gather community feedback in 2019, but progress stalled in 2020 due to the pandemic. After the workshop, the Planning Commission could consider the proposed rule amendments for adoption by spring.
The proposed amendments and presentations from 2019 are available online at www.mauicounty.gov/Planning under the “Hot Topics” section.
Property owners may also ask questions by emailing email@example.com.
