Axis deer to be topic of virtual meeting hosted by council member
The Maui News
Council Member Yuki Lei Sugimura will host a virtual informational meeting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday to address the struggle to control axis deer Upcountry.
The meeting will feature a panel of representatives from government agencies and partners.
Last month Sugimura, who holds the Upcountry residency seat, sought public input on the issue of deer harming farmers, ranchers, hunters and residents with the loss of crops or property damage.
“The next logical step is to bring together a panel to share with our greater community what currently is being done to address axis deer, what has worked, what hasn’t worked and to put forth suggestions for an actionable plan going forward,” Sugimura said in a news release Friday.
She also announced that her office plans to share a summary of community comments prior to the meeting. Additional questions and comments received during the meeting will be recorded by staff.
Those interested in viewing the meeting should preregister at tinyurl.com/AxisDeer. Once registered, they will receive a meeting link via email.
Anyone wanting to provide comment prior to the meeting should email yukilei.sugimura @mauicounty.us or call Sugimura’s office at 270-7939.
