Lanai man arrested for attempted murder

WAILUKU — A Lanai man was arrested on an attempted murder charge for allegedly strangling his former girlfriend at her residence.

In addition to second-degree murder, Alika Kaniho-Batoon, 23, of Lanai City was charged with kidnapping, two counts of felony abuse and first-degree terroristic threatening.

At 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, the 41-year-old woman reported to police that she had been strangled and held against her will at her residence by her ex-boyfriend, Kaniho-Batoon, police said.

The woman was able to escape from the residence on Ilima Avenue and run to the Lanai Police Station, police said.

She was treated for injuries at Lanai Community Hospital before being released.

Kaniho-Batoon was arrested Wednesday night.

He appeared by videoconference from the courthouse cellblock for his initial appearance Friday in Lanai District Court, convening in Wailuku. Judge Keith Tanaka kept bail at $71,000.

He was ordered to have no contact with his ex-girlfriend and to stay away from her residence.
