Waiehu brush fire fully contained
A brush fire was contained at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday after starting in the afternoon and burning about 7 acres in Waiehu, the Maui Fire Department reported.
Fire crews were continuing mop-up operations Thursday at the scene on the mauka side of Kahekili Highway between Waiehu Beach Road and Makaala Drive. The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to the Fire Department.
The fire was reported at 3 p.m. Wednesday, spreading in heavy brush with gusty winds of about 20 mph.
The Fire Department’s Air One and Air Two helicopters helped fight the fire, along with Wailuku and Kahului engine companies, Kahului hazmat and rescue crews, a battalion chief and tankers from Kahului, Wailea and Maui County. Two private bulldozers helped cut a firebreak around the perimeter.
