Maui family to honor son, raise awareness
The family of Casey Chargualaf will hold a “Cruise for Casey” event today to mark what would’ve been his 31st birthday and to raise awareness about suicide prevention.
Chargualaf was 29 years old when he took his own life on the grounds of Maui Memorial Medical Center on Sept. 9, 2019, after attempting three times within 12 hours to be admitted, the family said.
Today, the family plans to drive around his gravesite and then to the hospital for his birthday and memorial vigil. Participants will meet at the Home Depot parking lot in Kahului at 3:30 p.m. and leave at 4 p.m., heading to Kihei and then to Wailuku.
The event will also mark the pre-launch of The Casey Project, which aims to decrease suicide rates through education, advocacy and support, and to advocate for the improvement of suicide awareness, prevention and response.
A donation of $10 per vehicle is suggested for “Cruise for Casey” participants, who will receive a green ribbon and The Casey Project newsletter and magnet. All proceeds will go toward the project.
Participants are encouraged to wear green.
