Strong winds, high surf in forecast

Maui County will be under a wind advisory until 6 a.m. today, according to the National Weather Service.

East to northeast winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected. Winds this strong are capable of downing temporary structures and trees and causing localized power outages, the weather service said.

A high surf advisory will also be in effect until 6 p.m. today as strong trade winds over and upstream of the islands produce rough, elevated surf, the weather service said.

Waves of 8 to 12 feet are predicted along east-facing shores of Molokai and Maui. The surf is expected to decline Wednesday but will remain elevated.

The state Department of Health also issued a brown water advisory for Maui after heavy rain resulted in stormwater runoff entering into coastal waters. The public should stay out of floodwaters and stormwater runoff due to possible debris and bacteria, the department warned.
