Crews put out brush fire in Kula

An abandoned vehicle fire in Kula that turned into a quarter-acre brush fire on Sunday afternoon was 100 percent contained by evening, according to the Maui Fire Department.

Crews responded to the incident by Pueo Drive and Hiipali Loop at 12:53 p.m., controlled the brush fire by 2 p.m. and fully extinguished the the flames by 4:44 p.m. Terrain made access difficult, the department said.

Responding units included engines from Makawao and Kula; an engine, tanker and wildland firefighting truck from Kahului; the Fire Department’s Air One helicopter; and a battalion chief.

No injuries or evacuations were reported.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, the department said.
