Flags fly at half-staff, honor congressman

Flags across the state will be flown at half-staff until midnight to honor the late Congressman Alcee Hastings of Florida, Gov. David Ige announced.

Hastings was a civil rights activist and the longest-serving member of Florida’s congressional delegation, starting out in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1993. In January 2019, he announced he was undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer.

The Democratic lawmaker was 84.

According to law, flags are automatically lowered to half-staff following the death of a sitting member of Congress.
