Moped rider dies in collision with truck
A 62-year-old Lahaina man died when the moped he was operating collided with a commercial truck Friday morning on Honoapiilani Highway near Lahainaluna Road, police said.
The moped operator was identified as Joseph Deloache.
The crash occurred at 10 a.m.
Police said a preliminary investigation showed the 2015 Daixi moped was traveling southeast on the highway in the marked bike lane while a 2019 International Master truck traveled in the same direction in the lane closest to the bike lane. The moped operator failed to yield the right of way and merged into the lane that the truck was in, sideswiping the truck, police said.
The moped operator was ejected onto the roadway and swept under the truck, police said. He died at the crash scene.
The truck driver, a 27-year-old Kahului man, wasn’t injured, police said. He was wearing his seat belt.
The moped operator wasn’t wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, police said.
A preliminary investigation showed that speed, drugs and alcohol didn’t appear to be factors in the crash, police said.
The traffic death was the third this year on Maui County roads, compared with the same number at this time last year.
