Lanai brush fire burns over 3 acres

Lanai fire crews Wednesday evening were mopping up a brush fire south west of Lanai Airport, fire officials said.

The cause of the fire was undermined Wednesday evening. An estimated 3 to 4 acres were burned, fire officials said. The fire was under control at 6:20 p.m.

Time of alarm was at 4:49 p.m., with crews responding to Kaunolu Road off Kaumalapau Highway. Crews saw fire burning in light brush, estimated to be approximately 2 acres in size. Winds were estimated at 20 to 25 miles per hour. Lanai fire crews worked to secure the perimeter with the assistance of the state Department of Transportation Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting crew along with the fire department’s Air One helicopter. Two Goodfellow Bros. Water tankers also assisted.

Crews saw the fire as they were clearing the scene of a previous brush fire in the area of Manele Highway.
