Recovering water system affects Wailea
Wailea customers experienced disruptions to water service Friday that were connected to Thursday’s water outage in central Kihei, the county Department of Water Supply said.
An early morning water main break in a 30-inch transmission pipeline on Auhana Road left customers in central Kihei without water service for several hours on Thursday, affecting more than 150 homes and businesses and 200 fire hydrants.
Water service was restored Thursday afternoon, although there have been some lingering effects to the South Maui water distribution system, the county said.
The system was repressurizing on Friday as water tanks refilled, and the increased demand for water contributed to prolonged periods of no water to low water pressure in the Wailea area.
The department warned that customers could experience brown water once water service is restored and advised them to run their faucets until the water is clear.
Two water tankers were stationed at Kanakanui Road directly across from Kamali’i Elementary School for customers to fill water containers.
