Water line break causes all-day outage for Kihei customers

The Maui News

A water main break early Thursday morning caused an all-day water service outage for central Kihei customers, forcing the closure of the Kihei Police Station and portions of Kanakanui Road during repairs.

The break of the 30-inch transmission pipeline occurred on Auhana Road and affected more than 150 homes and businesses and 200 fire hydrants on South Kihei Road from East Welakahao to Kanani roads and Piilani Highway from East Welakahao to Kanakanui roads, the county said.

Both lanes of Kanakanui Road between Auhana Road and Alanui Keali’i Drive had to close during the assessment and repair.

A water tanker was available at Kanakanui Road directly across from Kamali’i Elementary School for customers to fill containers during the outage.

The Department of Water Supply reported shortly after 4 p.m. that water service had been restored and that affected waterlines were being flushed, causing some customers to experience low water pressure.

When water service returns, customers may have brown water for 24 to 48 hours and should flush their water lines by running a faucet for a short time before using water, the county said.
