Bystanders douse items on fire

A fire that burned items on the lanai of a Wailea residence was extinguished by bystanders Tuesday night, a fire official said.

Firefighters, who responded to the 11:28 p.m. call on Lanina Place, made checks to ensure the fire hadn’t spread to the residence, said Chris Stankis, acting information officer for the Maui Fire Department. He said firefighters found no spread or damage to the structure.

The cause of the fire was undetermined.
