Fire destroys cottage on Molokai, displaces one

A fire destroyed a cottage, damaged adjacent outbuildings and ignited brush before it was extinguished Friday night on Molokai, according to the Maui Fire Department.

The fire was reported at 7:50 p.m. in the 2700 block of Kamehameha V Highway in Kaunakakai.

A 10-by-12-foot cottage on the property was engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived, the Fire Department reported. Slight damage was reported to the exterior of an adjacent outbuilding, and the fire spread to adjacent brush.

The fire was brought under control at 8:10 p.m. and extinguished at 9:05 p.m.

A portion of the highway was closed for about 30 minutes to allow fire crews to operate safely, the Fire Department reported.

One occupant of the cottage, who had gotten out of the dwelling before fire crews arrived, was displaced by the fire, the Fire Department said. The occupant of the main house on the property was evacuated until the fire was brought under control.

The loss was estimated at $7,800 for possessions in the cottage, the Fire Department reported. The value of the loss of the cottage and damage to adjacent outbuildings hadn’t been determined.

The cause was undetermined but wasn’t suspicious, according to the Fire Department.

Engine companies from Kaunakakai, Hoolehua and Pukoo and a Kaunakakai tanker company responded to the fire, along with a fire inspector.
