Man dies of injuries suffered in crash

A motorcyclist who was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after a collision with a pickup truck on North Kihei Road died Friday at Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu, police said.

He was identified as 63-year-old Harry Soffner of Kihei.

The crash occurred at 7:45 p.m. June 6 as a black 2007 Nissan Frontier pickup truck was backing into the southbound lane of North Kihei Road and was struck on its right side by a red 2018 Harley Davidson motorcycle that was traveling south, police said.

The pickup truck was pushed back onto the shoulder of the road and hit the front of a parked van, police said.

Soffner, who was operating the motorcycle, was ejected onto the roadway, police said.

He was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room before being transferred to the Oahu hospital. He died at 1 a.m. Friday, police said.

The traffic death was the sixth this year on Maui County roads, compared with five at the same time last year.
