Paddlers rescued after canoe capsizes

Two paddlers were rescued Tuesday after a two-person outrigger canoe capsized in 15- to 20-mph winds in waters between Maliko Gulch and Hookipa Beach Park, the Maui Fire Department reported.

Firefighters and ocean safety units responded to the 11:12 a.m. call.

One paddler, a 57-year-old Haiku woman, was with the canoe and drifting downwind, the Fire Department reported. A second paddler, a 70-year-old Haiku man, had become separated from the canoe and was missing.

An ocean safety officer aboard rescue watercraft secured the canoe with the first paddler and took them to shore. Another ocean safety officer aboard rescue watercraft brought the second paddler to shore after he was located, the Fire Department reported.

Swells of 1 to 3 feet were reported at the time.

Paia firefighters and a fire rescue crew aboard the Fire Department’s Air One helicopter also responded to the call.
