Speed limit for part of Piilani Highway reduced to 35 mph

The speed limit along Piilani Highway between Uwapo Road and Lipoa Street has been permanently reduced from 40 to 35 mph in both directions, the state Department of Transportation announced.
The new speed limit signs were installed Tuesday and went into effect immediately, the department said.
In November, the department imposed a construction speed limit of 30 mph from the North Kihei Road intersection to the vicinity of Wailea Ike Drive while Piilani Highway underwent safety improvements that included the installation of guardrails, pavement markings and other signage. The department said at the time that the reduced speed limit was temporary.
However, with work complete, the new posted speed limit is now in effect for a portion of the highway.
“Piilani Highway is a principal arterial with auxiliary turn lanes, multiple signalized intersection, multiple unsignalized intersection, crosswalks, merge areas and multimodal use, including pedestrians and bicyclists,” the department said in a news release Tuesday. “The lower posted speed limit of 35 mph is appropriate for a multimodal use corridor and will improve safety for all roadway users.”
