One officer suffered minor injuries after a woman allegedly fought police and fled in her vehicle, nearly striking one of the officers.
At about 12:45 p.m. Wednesday in Kahului, two officers attempted to arrest the woman for outstanding warrants while she was seated in a parked vehicle, according to the Maui Police Department.
As officers attempted to restrain the woman, she resisted and began kicking, punching and biting officers while trying to start the vehicle, police said. Both officers were standing behind the open driver’s door. When one officer tried to stop the woman from starting the vehicle, she bit him, then started the vehicle and put it into reverse.
One officer was able to back away from the vehicle as it reversed at a high rate of speed, police said. However, the second officer was trapped behind the open door while still engaged with the woman until she stopped abruptly and put the vehicle in drive. She then pulled onto the roadway, nearly striking one of the officers while fleeing the scene.
A man was also arrested after arriving on scene and trying to stop officers from arresting the woman, according to police.
One officer suffered minor injuries in the altercation. Both officers declined medical attention.
The investigation is still ongoing, and no further information is available at this time, police said.
