California man dies at Waianapanapa

A 33-year-old California man died after he fell into the ocean and was found unresponsive in about 30 feet of water Thursday afternoon at Waianapanapa State Park, police said.

Police, medics and firefighters responded to the 4:42 p.m. call.

The man had been standing on a cliff when he fell about 20 feet into the ocean, police said.

High surf and strong currents kept rescuers from immediately retrieving the man, and rescue workers lost sight of him as the current pulled him out to sea and below the surface, police said.

A search by air began, and after about an hour and 15 minutes, firefighters located the man about 30 feet below the surface of the water, police said.

Medics determined the man was dead. An autopsy has been scheduled.
