Flowering shower trees
A motorcyclist passes a stand of flowering shower trees Thursday morning on Baldwin Avenue. According to the Makawao History Museum website, the tradition of planting showers trees along the winding road between Paia and Makawao was started in 1931 by Ethel Baldwin. Baldwin (1879-1967) also led the fight for women’s suffrage on Maui. She promoted the Red Cross and USO, as well as child welfare and old age pension programs. Baldwin also designed and donated Rainbow Park.
