Police are working to identify a vehicle and its driver who fled after a hit-and-run collision that killed a 74-year-old pedestrian Monday night in Kihei.
The pedestrian was identified as Oscar Coronado of Kihei.
The collision occurred at 7:36 p.m. on South Kihei Road south of Walaka Street.
A police investigation shows a sport utility vehicle was traveling north on South Kihei Road when it struck Coronado, who was walking across the road from west to east but wasn’t in a marked crosswalk.
Upon being hit by the sport utility vehicle, the pedestrian was thrown onto the roadway and suffered critical life-threatening injuries, police said. The driver of the vehicle didn’t stop or render aid to the pedestrian and continued traveling north on South Kihei Road, police said. The vehicle was last seen turning right onto Kanani Road.
Coronado was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room, where he died shortly after arriving of injuries he sustained in the collision, police said.
Witnesses described the vehicle that struck the pedestrian as a red sport utility vehicle.
Police Vehicular Homicide Unit investigators are working to identify the vehicle and its driver who fled the scene, police said.
Anyone who may have information on the crash is asked to call officer Alvin Ota of the Vehicular Homicide Unit at 270-6537 or 244-6400.
The fatality was the 10th on Maui County roads this year, compared with six at the same time last year.
