Brush fire 90% contained in Kaupo

Firefighters were working to extinguish a brush fire that was 90 percent contained after burning about 5 acres Sunday afternoon in Kaupo.

The fire was reported at 1:50 p.m. in the area of Waiu and Nuu Landing.

Fire crews arrived on scene to find 3 to 4 acres burning in strong winds of 25 to 35 mph, according to the Maui Fire Department. By 4:45 p.m., the fire was 90 percent contained, the Fire Department reported.

Firefighters remained on scene to conduct mop-up operations, including securing the perimeter.

Kula and Makawao engine companies responded to the fire, along with a Kahului tanker and relief tanker and two helicopters.
