Charter Commission to meet Thursday

The Maui Charter Commission on Thursday will continue its discussion on Maui County Council districting and elections during its virtual meeting.

Commissioners will consider whether to adopt ranked-choice voting as the electoral system for council elections. A ranked-choice voting system is when voters rank candidates by preference on their ballots.

At the commission’s last meeting, members voted to propose a Charter amendment to create three voter districts within the county.

Other matters that may be discussed Thursday include topics on county budget and finance, ethics, general provisions and boards/commission.

This is the latest in a series of meetings to obtain input and insights from the community related to proposed Charter amendments that will be considered for placement on the November 2022 ballot.

The commission would like to hear from the public and written testimony can be sent to Charter.Commission@mauicounty.gov.
