High bacteria count reported at Cove Park
The state Department of Health posted an advisory for Cove Park after discovering high levels of bacteria during routine beach monitoring, the department said Thursday.
Testing for enterococci found levels of 137 per 100 milliliters, indicating that potentially harmful microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, protozoa or parasites may be present in the water.
Swimming at beaches with pollution in the water can make people sick. However, the illnesses are usually not very serious and have no long-term health effects, the department said.
The advisory will remain in effect at Cove Park until water sample results no longer exceed the threshold level of 130 enterococci per 100 milliliters.
