Sea creature sculptures amaze Mauians
A shark sculpture crafted from driftwood rises ominously from the beach fronting Kahului Beach Road outside Kahului Harbor Saturday morning. The shark is the latest piece on the rocky, windswept beach made by Cris Gutierrez. It joins his humpback whale and sea turtle. Gutierrez said the shark took three days to build and was inspired by stories from local people about their aumakua.
Retired University of Hawai’i Maui College professor John Pye snaps photos of driftwood sculptures outside Kahului Harbor Saturday morning. “I have driven by these 100 times,” Pye said. “My wife said, ‘you really should stop and take some pictures.'” The sculptures were created by Cris Gutierrez.
