Expert to speak at virtual seminar on leader training

A free, two-day virtual Volunteer Leader Training Seminar next month will feature ìinternationally renownedî guest speaker Tobi Johnson, who will speak about community building and keeping connections with off-site or remote work volunteers.

The Department of Housing and Human Concerns Volunteer Center is hosting the event via Zoom from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 9 and 10. The purpose of each 90-minute session is to strengthen community involvement now, so volunteers are ready later, the department said.

Over the two-day seminar, participants will learn practical steps for volunteer managers to strengthen connections among volunteers and how to engage others in new and fun ways.

Johnson is founder of VolunteerPro, an online training and networking community for volunteer leaders. She has more than three decades of practical experience in nonprofit management, program development, program coordination, and learning design and training in the social sector. She wrote the first chapter of Volunteer Engagement 2.0: Ideas and Insights for Transforming Volunteer Programs in a Changing World, published by Jossey-Bass in 2015.

The first course will focus on community engagement in times of uncertainty and why investing in community now is more important than ever. Johnson will also speak about ways to improve the lives of volunteers and creative roles and projects to boost involvement.

The second course offers practical tips and tools for creating connections online, how to post virtual volunteer opportunities that get attention, three easy tools to boost team connection and productivity, and ways to engage those who arenít yet comfortable with technology, according to a news release.

This is a free educational event sponsored by the County of Maui for volunteer managers and nonprofit executive directors.
