Longtime Hookipa Beach Park regulars Joe Moepono (right) of Makawao and Uncle Doug Sigler of Haiku talk story Tuesday morning while a soft rain falls outside the pavilion. Moepono said he has been coming to Ho’okipa for “about 35 years,” dating back to when he and his brother used to ride big waves. He said he no longer surfs, but still enjoys the ocean views, talking to people, sharing good food and helping direct tourists to where they can see green sea turtles hauled out on the sand. “We’re the old guys down here, we’re like tour guides,” Moepono said. “We used to huli huli pigs right over here.”
