Kahului fire burns home, displaces five people

A fire that burned a Kahului home on Saturday displaced five people and caused $123,000 in structural damage, the Maui Fire Department reported.
MFD responded to a fire on East Papa Avenue at 11:58 a.m. on Saturday, controlled the flames by 12:29 p.m. and extinguished the fire by 2 p.m.
Engine, hazmat, rescue and tanker crews from Kahului; an engine from Kihei; a battalion chief; and a fire investigator responded to the scene.
No one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported, the department said.
The value of damage to contents within the home is still being determined. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Volunteers with the American Red Cross responded to the fire, which impacted four adults and one child, and are meeting with them to ensure their immediate emergency needs for food, shelter and clothing are met, according to a news release.
The Red Cross also said that caseworkers will continue to follow up with anyone affected in the coming weeks to provide referrals, guidance or additional assistance as needed to help with the recovery process.
