Bridge work to close road Dec. 3-6

Work on Mahalawa Bridge in East Maui will force a closure of Hana Highway at Mile Post 43 from Dec. 3 to 6, Goodfellow Brothers and the Maui County Department of Public Works announced.

An around-the-clock closure at the project site is slated from 9 p.m. Dec. 3 until 6 a.m. Dec. 6. No through traffic will be allowed during this period.

The contractor will be installing asphalt pavement, striping, relocating signs and doing other work. The project will complete the installation of a temporary pre-engineered bridge over the existing Mahalawa Bridge.

During the road closure, drivers should choose an alternate route, the county said. Visitors planning to visit Hana during the road closure should return to Central Maui by way of Hana Highway, not Piilani Highway, to avoid the area.
