Work on the Mahalawa Bridge in East Maui will disrupt traffic and force a closure of Piilani Highway between Hana and Kaupo Friday night through Monday morning, according to the county Department of Public Works.

A lowboy truck carrying an oversized load with leading and trailing escort vehicles will leave Waikapu bound for Keokea Park on Friday afternoon.

From Keokea, the convoy will proceed through Ulupalakua, Piilani Highway and Hana Highway en route to the project site at Mile Marker 43 between Hana and Kaupo. Traffic along the route is expected to be impeded between noon and 6 p.m. to accommodate transport of a 6-foot-by-45-foot load of bulky bridge components.

An around-the-clock closure at the project site is slated from 9 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Monday.

The contractor will be installing a temporary preengineered bridge over the existing Mahalawa Bridge, so no through-traffic will be possible during this period, the county said.

Drivers should choose an alternate route. Visitors planning to visit Hana during the road closure should return to Central Maui by way of Hana Highway, not Piilani Highway, to avoid the area.
