Flags to be flown at half-staff for official

Flags will be flown at half-staff Wednesday in honor of the late former Honolulu Mayor Eileen Anderson.

She was the first woman to serve as Honolulu mayor, holding the office from 1981 to 1985. Anderson also was the first woman to serve as director of the state Department of Budget and Finance under Gov. George Ariyoshi.

“Former Mayor Anderson was a trailblazer who was an inspiration to girls and young women who aspire to enter the political arena or become leaders in their chosen fields,” Gov. David Ige said in a news release.

Anderson died Nov. 3 at age 93.
