WAILUKU — A Kihei man who was arrested for crimes after relapsing was sentenced Thursday to a one-year jail term as part of four years’ probation.
Ryan Rodriguez, 29, has already spent about one year in jail, but because he was arrested later in one case, he will end up serving the 18-month term recommended as part of a plea agreement, Deputy Public Defender Zach Raidmae said.
In four criminal cases, he had pleaded no contest to two counts of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, credit card theft, third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug and first-degree theft.
The crimes occurred from September 2020 to April 2021, according to court records.
“It’s sad to see a person who’s graduated from the Drug Court program quickly slip back into a place where he doesn’t want to be,” Raidmae said.
According to court records, burglary and other charges against Rodriguez were dismissed in 2018 when he graduated from the Maui Drug Court program of treatment and supervision.
Rodriguez played baseball in college and “basically went down the darker road and couldn’t control it,” Raidmae said.
“Here we are dealing with the aftermath of his relapses,” he said. “The thing about people who are in the Drug Court program — they know how to get it back together, they know how to succeed.”
Rodriguez said he was looking forward to being on probation.
In sentencing Rodriguez, 2nd Circuit Judge Peter Cahill followed a plea agreement between the defense and prosecution.
“It’s been a long struggle,” Cahill said. “Despite that, I’d give him the opportunity to see if he can improve his situation.
“There’s a lot of new cases. A lot of harm’s been done, a lot of victims.”
Rodriguez was ordered to pay $4,769 in restitution. He was ordered not to consume alcohol or illegal drugs.
