Narrowly avoiding the nene

The Maui News / MATTHEW THAYER photos

FIRST PHOTO: A pair of nene walking along Amala Place in Kahului Thursday afternoon force drivers to swing wide around them. State biologists urged drivers to watch out for the endangered birds after a pair were reportedly struck and killed by cars on A’alele Street near the Kahului Airport last month. Nene nesting season coincides with the holiday travel and shopping season, and paved roads resemble lava flows that the birds’ ancestors evolved on, according to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.
