Man accused of assault with knife

WAILUKU — A man was arrested early Saturday after he allegedly assaulted another man with a knife near Kahului Community Center.

Darius Hong, 30, of Pukalani was charged with two counts of second-degree assault.

After he and the other man got into an argument, Hong allegedly used a knife to cause a 3-inch laceration to the other man’s left cheek, Deputy Prosecutor Brant Yoshimoto said during Hong’s initial appearance Tuesday in Wailuku District Court.

Hong reportedly told police he is homeless and was smoking methamphetamine earlier in the evening, Yoshimoto said.

“The state feels he is a danger to society,” Yoshimoto said, in asking that bail remain at $1,000 for Hong.

While he has no convictions, the prosecutor’s office is reviewing at least two felony cases involving Hong, Yoshimoto said.

Deputy Public Defender Andres Tobar asked for Hong, a lifelong Maui resident, to be released on supervision. Tobar said Hong was struck in the back with a plastic chair during the fight.

Judge Douglas Wright set bail at $200 for Hong. He was ordered to stay away from the other man and from Kahului Community Center at Onehee Avenue.
