Piilani Highway to see lane closures, lower speeds in some areas
Ongoing roundabout construction in Kihei will force a full closure of Piilani Highway between Kaonoulu Street and Piikea Avenue from 9:30 p.m. Monday through 4:30 a.m. Tuesday to reset the traffic control, the state Department of Transportation announced Friday.
Drivers, including first responders, will be detoured to South Kihei Road as an alternate route during the full closure.
Following the nighttime full closure, there will also be a temporary reduction of Piilani Highway between Kaonoulu Street and Piikea Avenue to one lane in each direction through Phase 1 construction of the roundabout, which is anticipated to run through August, weather permitting. The reduction of the highway to one lane in this section will be effective 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the department said.
Another change involves lowering the speed limit on Piilani Highway between East Lipoa Street/Lipoa Parkway and Okolani Drive/Mikioi Place from 40 mph to 35 mph in both directions on or before Wednesday.
The reduced speed limit will be effective as soon as the speed limit signs are posted, the department said. The new speed limit of 35 mph will align with the speed limit for Piilani Highway between Uwapo Road/Kaiwahine Street and Lipoa Street/East Lipoa Parkway.
